Audience -
This course is intended for teachers and other school personnel working with students with ASD and communication difficulties.
Description
The course will examine two current assessment instruments which are derived from the science of Applied Behaviour Analysis: ABLLS-R and the VB-MAPP. The behaviour view of language as ‘Verbal Behaviour’ will be reviewed thoroughly. Then each assessment device will be described in terms of content, scoring and interpretation.
The course is divided into three sections:
1. The behavioural understanding and explanation of language acquisition – Verbal Behaviour Operants – Echoic, Tact, Mand and Intraverbal.
2. The ABLLS-R assessment instrument – what it is, what it does, how it is scored, and how you can use it in your classroom.
3.
The VB-MAPP assessment instrument – what it is, what it does, how it is scored, how it differs from the ABLLS-R, and how you can use it in your classroom.
Course outcomes
Participants will:
1. Understand how the verbal operants – Echoic, Tact, Mand, and Intraverbal – are controlled and learned.
2.
Understand that communication is both verbal-vocal, and non-vocal in nature.
3.
Learn how to administer and interpret the ABLLS-R and
4.
Learn how to administer and interpret the VB-MAPP
5.
Appreciate how these communication assessment instruments contribute to our understanding of the atypical developmental profiles of students with ASD in communicative competence.

Presenter: Dr Patricia Daly
Dr. Patricia M. Daly is the Head of the Department of Special Education at Mary Immaculate College in Limerick, and is seconded half-time to the Special Education Support Service (SESS). She has a doctorate in Applied Behaviour Analysis from Ohio State University and worked for 25 years in the US. She was a post-primary teacher in Co. Cork for 4 years in the late 1970s.
