During the Q&A at the end of our webinar with Jed Baker, he reminded us that it can take up to a month to learn the skill of losing graciously.
He suggested that we allow the learner to win a few games, and then we prepare them for losing by asking ‘Are you ready to lose a game now? Here we provide a social story titled ‘It’s ok not to win’. You may wish to adapt the calming strategies to reflect what works for the child or young person you know. Remember to ‘reward effort not outcome’ and to praise any gradual improvement to the losing response.
