Risk Factors for Bullying of Children with Autism and Preventative Strategies
Course Description
Bullying is a common issue within the education system for all students however, greater understanding may be necessary when considering children and young people with autism as they can be perceived as particularly vulnerable. There is evidence that bullying of pupils with autism is widespread and has devastating consequences for the emotional well-being and learning potential of pupils.
This session will examine the prevalence and risk factors for bullying of children with autism. Participants will learn about the impact of bullying of children with autism and strategies for reporting and preventing bullying. The training will provide practical strategies that educational professionals may use to support children with autism who have been bullied.
Expected Outcomes
By the end of the training, participants will:
• Learn about risk factors for bullying of children with autism and the impact of bullying.
• Learn some strategies to prevent bullying of children with autism and foster positive peer relationships.
• Be provided with strategies for helping children with autism who have been bullied in the past.
