Christmas dinner can be overwhelming for many autistic children and young people.

They may feel overloaded by the different tastes and smells as well as all the noise, while the social demands can cause additional stress.  Try to keep some familiar items and food on the table, and remember that it is fine for them to have their favourite dinner instead.

This social narrative can be used before Christmas Day to reduce any anxiety about the dinner.

Please note that this is an example of a social narrative, but it will be most effective when individualised to each child or young person’s specific needs.
