Visual supports are not just for the classroom!

Many different contexts can be challenging for autistic children and young people, and so visual supports need to be generalised beyond the classroom and home.

The playground/yard is a noisy, busy environment and this can make communication very challenging for autistic children and young people.  This, in turn, can then have an impact on the ability and motivation to engage in outdoor play.  It can be difficult to process instructions and follow game rules against a background of overwhelming noise, while sensory overload can affect the child’s ability to communicate verbally.

This communication board includes many of the key visual supports required for interactions within the playground/yard, supporting engagement in outdoor play.
