In this podcast interview, Breiffni O’Reilly (Specialist Teacher, Middletown Centre for Autism) talks to two teachers, Eimear and Paula.

They discuss the anxiety which change can bring for autistic students, and how pre-empting and preparation can reduce this stress. They use the example of Sports Day to highlight how preparation is the key to success. Paula and Eimear also explain how one student was supported in recognising his own feelings and triggers so that he knew when he needed time to opt out of challenging activities.  The importance of emotional regulation, managing demands and differentiating work is also discussed.
