Young people with autism experience anxiety in many situations, with some experiencing significant anxiety difficulties. This session is an introduction to strategies that can be used to alleviate the experience of anxiety in young people with autism.
Expected Outcomes:
Parents and family members will
• Understand how the core impairments of autism, including sensory difficulties, can contribute to the development of anxiety.
• Understand how anxiety can escalate and may result in an outburst.
• Develop some simple strategies to prevent the escalation of anxiety.
• Understand the basics of cognitively based management approaches.

Deirdre O'Shea

Deirdre O'Shea is an Autism Intervention Specialist at the Middletown Centre for Autism. Deirdre has extensive experience in working with autistic children and young people who display complex behaviours. She has also worked across the school and home settings providing social skills groups for autistic children, and training, support, and advice in autism related topics to parents and professionals. Deirdre has a degree in Psychology with the Open University, a post graduate Diploma in Special Education, and is also a Registered Behaviour Technician.
