Active workshops can be seen as an ideal way for siblings (aged 8-16 years) of children and young people with a diagnosis of autism to learn about the diagnosis and to share their experiences with other siblings.  The peer support element of attending this fun, educational active day can be beneficial as some siblings can feel different from their peers. This workshop involving Art, Music and Drama sessions, as well as autism education sessions will provide siblings with the opportunity to share and express their experiences, anxieties and hopes with other young people who understand their situation.

What are the aims and objectives? 
Aims: 

- To provide siblings with a supportive environment to share their experiences through the mediums of Art, Music and Drama
- To provide a supportive context for siblings to meet other siblings
- To increase siblings understanding of the diagnosis of autism and to introduce them to useful coping strategies 
 

Objectives: 
- To provide information to siblings on the diagnosis of autism. 
- To facilitate discussions about autism through fun, interactive activities.
- To enable siblings meet peers in similar circumstances. 
- To support siblings, manage difficult situations by introducing them to coping strategies.
 

Criteria for participating will apply to this sibling workshop
- The sibling must be aged between 8 and 16 years of age
- This workshop is for siblings of children/young people who have a diagnosis of autism
- Siblings attending must be independent with personal care 
- Siblings must be willing to participate in educational, fun activities without parental presence
- Parents must complete a preliminary questionnaire which will be emailed following application

Orla Gildea

Orla Gildea is a graduate of the Masters in Dramatherapy from NUI Maynooth where she also completed a H. Dip in Drama and Theatre Studies. She is a qualified Laban Dance and Movement Leader and Speech and Drama Teacher. Orla facilitates many groups with varying needs including a weekly session for children with autism in a Primary School setting. This school has embraced Dramatherapy as a successful creative tool in the development of the child within an educational setting. Orla’s areas of expertise include multi-sensory awareness, inclusiveness, emotional, behaviour and communication difficulties. Orla has been running her own Speech and Drama School for the last twelve years.

Emma Donnelly

Emma Donnelly is a Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Music Therapist. She is the founder and director of Music Therapy Connections NI, which provides a community-based music therapy service for children, young people and adults in Northern Ireland. Emma specialises in working with autistic children and young adults, children with severe or profound learning difficulties, brain injury or physical disabilities and adults with mental health. Prior to this, Emma worked as an early year’s special needs teacher and music co-ordinator in a Special School in Belfast. Emma is currently working for Middletown Centre for Autism as a specialist teacher. She has experience working with autistic children as both a teacher and, a music therapist. She has extensive knowledge of how to use music creatively to reach the cognitive, behavioural, social and emotional goals of autistic children.

Lizzie Devlin

Lizzie Devlin has a background in fine art and community arts and has worked in many different roles in gallery education, community arts and arts in health in Northern Ireland. Through this work she experienced how participating in the arts can contribute to individual’s health and well-being and the transformative power of the arts at community level. Lizzie completed an MSc in Art Psychotherapy through the Centre for Psychotherapy in Belfast and the University of East London in 2011. She is a HPC (Health Professions Council) registered Art Psychotherapist and has experience of working with both children and adults across a range of client groups in different settings. During the last four years Lizzie worked as an Art Psychotherapist in Primary and Secondary schools on a one to one basis which included many children and young people with autism. Lizzie is also a graduate of Leeds University obtaining a BA Hons Degree in Fine Art and University College Dublin, Post Grad Diploma in Arts Administration.
