Active workshops can be seen as an ideal way for siblings (aged 8-16 years) of children and young people with a diagnosis of autism to learn about the diagnosis and to share their experiences with other siblings.  The peer support element of attending this fun, educational active day can be beneficial as some siblings can feel different from their peers. This workshop involving Art, Music and Drama sessions, as well as autism education sessions will provide siblings with the opportunity to share and express their experiences, anxieties and hopes with other young people who understand their situation.

What are the aims and objectives? 
Aims: 
- To provide siblings with a supportive environment to share their experiences through the mediums of Art, Music and Drama
- To provide a supportive context for siblings to meet other siblings
- To increase siblings understanding of the diagnosis of autism and to introduce them to useful coping strategies 
 

Objectives: 
- To provide information to siblings on the diagnosis of autism. 
- To facilitate discussions about autism through fun, interactive activities.
- To enable siblings meet peers in similar circumstances. 
- To support siblings, manage difficult situations by introducing them to coping strategies.

Criteria for participating will apply to this sibling workshop
- The sibling must be aged between 8 and 16 years of age
- This workshop is for siblings of children/young people who have a diagnosis of autism
- Siblings attending must be independent with personal care 
- Siblings must be willing to participate in educational, fun activities without parental presence
- Parents must complete a preliminary questionnaire which will be emailed following application

Orla Gildea

Orla Gildea is a graduate of the Masters in Dramatherapy from NUI Maynooth where she also completed a H. Dip in Drama and Theatre Studies. She is a qualified Laban Dance and Movement Leader and Speech and Drama Teacher. Orla facilitates many groups with varying needs including a weekly session for children with autism in a Primary School setting. This school has embraced Dramatherapy as a successful creative tool in the development of the child within an educational setting. Orla’s areas of expertise include multi-sensory awareness, inclusiveness, emotional, behaviour and communication difficulties. Orla has been running her own Speech and Drama School for the last twelve years.

Karen Diamond

Karen Diamond is the Head Music Therapist with the NI Music Therapy Trust (NIMTT), Belfast and has been with the Trust since it was established in 1990. She has worked with various client groups in that time but currently specialises in working with children and adults with severe learning disabilities, and adults with acquired brain injury and physical disabilities. Karen is responsible for the clinical management of a team of music therapists who work across Northern Ireland delivering clinical music therapy and training and workshop programmes of the NIMTT to parents, carers and professionals from all sectors. Karen has worked with a group of adults with severe learning disabilities for many years who have performed in various venues and who recorded and launched a CD of their singing in 2012 firmly believing that there is ‘ability in disability’.

Aoife Ní Dhubháin

Aoife Ní Dhubháin has an M.Sc in art psychotherapy from Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh; a B.A in Integrative Counselling from IICP, Dublin, and a B.A. from Trinity College, Dublin. Aoife has been working with various clients as an art therapist in private practice since 2011, primarily focusing on work with children and teenagers with autism. She also has five years’ experience working with adults with ASD between residential services, day services, and in an outreach centre.
