This training will demonstrate how the curriculum may be adapted to support children with autism. The use of music will be demonstrated to encourage engagement and participation in learning. Participants will be shown specific approaches, to create an autism friendly classroom in Special and Primary Schools. Participants will have access to a sample autism friendly classroom environment. Education Professionals from Pre-School and Post-Primary Schools are welcome to attend.

Expected Outcomes: By the end of this training, participants will:

• Increase their understanding of the challenges and strengths of children with autism and how they impact on learning experiences.

• Integrate the use of music to achieve teaching and learning objectives. • Make use of new strategies and ideas to help ensure that children with autism have access to the curriculum in a way that is conducive to their needs and abilities.

• Discover how songs, rhythmic chants and games can support the necessary development of social skills, including joint attention, turn-taking, waiting and listening.

• Develop their understanding of how music and rhythmic games can increase self- esteem and social interaction between all peers within the classroom.

Claire Smyton

Claire Smyton

Claire Smyton is Specialist Teacher in Middletown Centre for Autism and has 20 years’ experience working with autistic children and young people. Prior to this, Claire worked as a Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator in a Post Primary School.  Claire has also taught in an Autism Learning Support Class, within a Mainstream Primary School and in the Autism Advisory and Intervention Service, as a Support Teacher.  Claire is also a parent of an autistic child.  Through Claire’s experiences as a parent and teacher, she has gained extensive experience in developing and using resources and varied teaching approaches with autistic children and young people. Claire also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Autism and has a particular interest and experience in 'whole school' strategic planning in best autism practice across all settings.

Emma Donnelly

Emma Donnelly is a Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Music Therapist. She is the founder and director of Music Therapy Connections NI, which provides a community-based music therapy service for children, young people and adults in Northern Ireland. Emma specialises in working with autistic children and young adults, children with severe or profound learning difficulties, brain injury or physical disabilities and adults with mental health. Prior to this, Emma worked as an early year’s special needs teacher and music co-ordinator in a Special School in Belfast. Emma is currently working for Middletown Centre for Autism as a specialist teacher. She has experience working with autistic children as both a teacher and, a music therapist. She has extensive knowledge of how to use music creatively to reach the cognitive, behavioural, social and emotional goals of autistic children.
