Autism is a lifelong, developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people and how they experience the world around them.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Autism (DSM) is characterised by

  • Deficits in social communication and social interaction
  • Restrictive repetitive behaviours and activities​ (including unusual sensory sensitivities)
  • Both components are required for a diagnosis of autism. ​
