Brushing teeth can cause anxiety for many autistic children and young people.

They may be unsure of what is expected, dislike the feel of the toothbrush or the taste of the toothpaste.  Breaking the task into steps can reduce stress and make it more manageable.  This visual support clarifies the steps involved. A short break can be given between each step to help the child or young person regulate themselves.

Remember that modifications can also be made to the task, such as different types of toothpaste and tooth brushes to meet sensory preferences.
