The use of the visual support helps to make an abstract concept (energy levels and emotional states) more concrete and therefore easier to understand.

Most young people are familiar with the concept of a device, such as a phone or tablet using a battery to provide energy. They will also be familiar with the concept of recharging the battery so the device will continue to work effectively. We can use these familiar principles to help young people relate to their own energy levels. Activities that help to replenish energy levels will be unique to each individual child or young person. It may be helpful to develop a list of such activities as a prompt that can be used when they feel they need to recharge their battery.
