Some autistic children and young people enjoy highly flavoured foods, while others prefer more bland flavours and familiar textures.

Rigid diets and food avoidance are often due to differences in how sensory input is processed. The Centre’s online resource on Sensory Processing explains this in more detail, and has specific sections on the Gustatory (taste), Olfactory (smell) and Tactile (touch) systems, which all play a part in processing the sensory properties of food.
