‘Power Cards’ is a concept developed by Elisa Gagnon in her book ‘Power Cards: Using Special Interests to Motivate Children and Youth with Asperger Syndrome and Autism’.

Power cards can be used to teach concepts and provide visual prompts, using the child or young person’s favourite character.

The Centre has developed these Power Cards as examples of how they can be used to support those who have differences in interoceptive awareness.  In one example, the child or young person is reminded to drink water if they are not detecting the signs that they are thirsty.  The other example would suit those who do not register feelings of tiredness, and so need a prompt to go to bed.

You can insert the child’s favourite character into these examples, and you can make your own power cards for other messages which you wish to communicate.
