It can be difficult for anyone to stop an enjoyable activity and move to something else, and transitions like this are particularly dysregulating for many autistic children and young people.

Stopping in the middle of a favourite book, TV programme or computer game can be upsetting, but the concept can be taught through the use of a symbol or object to represent pause.  It is helpful to teach this by first pausing a less preferred activity and moving them to a favourite activity, and then slowly generalise the concept to all activities.
