It can be difficult to teach children and young people that honesty is not always the best policy.

Understanding when to speak the truth and when to be more ‘diplomatic’ requires a high level of social understanding.  It is an important skill which can ensure success in interactions and relationships.  This resource uses the idea of a social filter to support teaching of this skill.

It is also important to teach others that when an autistic classmate or sibling makes honest and direct comments, the intention is not to hurt feelings or cause upset.  Understanding one another’s perspectives will build positive relationships.
