Active workshops are an ideal way for siblings (aged 8-16 years) of children/young people with a diagnosis of autism to learn about the diagnosis and to share their experiences with other siblings. The peer support element of attending this fun, educational active day can be beneficial as some siblings can feel different from their peers. This workshop involving Art, Music and Drama sessions, as well as autism education sessions will provide siblings with the opportunity to share and express their experiences, anxieties and hopes with other young people who understand their situation.
What are the aims and objectives?
- To provide siblings with a supportive environment to share their experiences through the mediums of Art, Music and Drama
- To provide a supportive context for siblings to meet other siblings
- To increase siblings understanding of the diagnosis of autism and to introduce them to useful coping strategies
To provide information to siblings on the diagnosis of autism.
To facilitate discussions about autism through fun, interactive activities.
To enable siblings meet peers in similar circumstances.
To support siblings manage difficult situations by introducing them to coping strategies.
Criteria for participating will apply to this sibling workshop
The sibling must be aged between 8 and 16 years of age
This workshop is for siblings of children/young people who have a diagnosis of autism
Siblings attending must be independent with personal care
Siblings must be willing to participate in educational, fun activities without parental presence
Parents must complete a preliminary questionnaire which will be emailed following application
