Autism, An Examination of Sensory and Behaviour Issues
Children and young people with autism may present with a range of behaviours, which have an impact upon their ability to learn, interact and engage within school and other environments. This training will examine the diverse factors, which may cause these observable behaviours. Factors examined will include physiological reasons, positive and negative reinforcers and sensory processing difficulties. Participants will be shown how to assess the functionality of behaviours and to differentiate between behaviours, which are caused by sensory processing difficulties, and behaviours, which are caused by other factors. Suggestions for good practice in behaviour management will be discussed and examples of Behaviour Support Plans will be provided.
Expected Outcomes
By the end of the training, participants will gain a greater understanding in:
• The range of factors, which may cause the behaviours affecting learning and positive interaction.
• How to carry out a functional assessment of behaviour and how to discriminate between the possible factors causing the behaviours.
• The impact of sensory processing differences on behaviour.
• Good practice in behaviour management in order to facilitate increased engagement in learning and interaction, including strategies to meet sensory needs.
• How to write Behaviour Support Plans for pupils with autism.
