Autism and Understanding Anxiety: Autistic Children and Young People with High Care and Education Needs Anxiety is a common and understandable experience for many autistic learners, particularly within structured educational environments that may involve high sensory demands, transitions, and communication challenges. Anxiety should be understood as a signal that the learner's nervous system is under strain, not as a behavioural concern. In special school contexts, staff are often well placed to notice early indicators of stress, given their close and consistent relationships with learners. Effective support is proactive, relational, and collaborative. Professionals will: Learn to recognise individual signs of increasing anxiety and stress responses. Develop preventative strategies that reduce demand, increase predictability, and support regulation. Gain an introduction to cognitively based supports that can be adapted to be developmentally appropriate, flexible, and accessible for autistic learners with high care needs.
