Rightful Presence: Moving Beyond Placement to Belonging
Rightful Presence is the understanding that students with disabilities should not have to earn, prove, or justify their place in general education settings. Their presence is expected and valued, with the supports and opportunities needed to participate, contribute, learn, and belong alongside their peers.
Purpose:
This introductory session explores the shift from thinking primarily about where a student is placed to considering how schools create the conditions for meaningful inclusion. Through practical examples, participants will examine how decisions about placement, access, support, and participation can either reinforce separation or create authentic membership in the school community.
Outcomes:
Educational leaders will leave with a foundational understanding of Rightful Presence, be able to distinguish between placement, physical presence, participation, and belonging, and identify practical ways to strengthen inclusive experiences for students with disabilities within their own school settings.
